Remarks/Comments for Koumantarios Gallery of Sparta

The Koumantarios Gallery of Sparta is the first branch of the National Gallery outside Athens. It was founded in 1982, following the donation of the neoclassical building and the collection of Ioannis Koumantaros by his children, Dolly Goulandris and Georgios Koumantaros.

On the ground floor of the building, the I. Koumantarou collection, consisting of works by European painters with various themes from the 16th to the 19th century, as well as temporary exhibitions are presented.

The first floor of the Gallery was completely renovated in 2018 and a new permanent exhibition of works from the National Gallery was created, through which the history of modern Greek art is briefly presented.

The permanent exhibition includes seventy-two works, paintings and sculptures, by important Greek artists. The themes include historical painting, portraiture, antiquity, ethnography, symbolism, sublimity, reflections on Greek light and Greekness, abstract and abstract art.

Persons with Disabilities

The koumantarios Art Gallery of Sparta is fully accessible to people with disabilities - wheelchair users from the entrance to all areas open to the public.

The museum has access ramps for visitors, a lift for the passage of people with disabilities and an appropriately designed WC for the disabled.

The flooring material is wood in the exhibition areas and there are concrete tiles in the access/passage areas.

The Koumantarios Gallery organises educational programmes and activities for all ages, many of which are accessible to people with disabilities.

There is a small shop in the entrance foyer, which is also fully accessible to wheelchair users. Some of the items in the shop come from the National Gallery, but there are also codes that are made in Sparta, specifically for the Annex, and are only sold there.

Persons with disabilities and one of their companions are entitled to free admission, the latter if they have a disability of 67% or more, regardless of their country of origin, upon presentation of their identity card or passport and the Disability Certificate E.F.K.A. (decision of the Disability Certification Centre - KEPA) for residents of Greece or a similar certificate from a corresponding competent body abroad.
