National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens (EMST) is the leading national institution concerning contemporary art and visual culture in Greece, and one of the most prominent cultural organizations in Southern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. For the EMST, art and visual culture are considered vital factors in transforming education, knowledge production, alternative narratives, and crucial means of advocating and promoting values of progress and emancipation within a society. Through the expository activity, the events and projects, and its publications, EMST places its emphasis on the practices which critically examine society as a unit, its political priorities, and address major contemporary issues such as democracy, governance, equality, economy, environment, the consequences of globalization and technological domination, while at the same time point out the importance of public dialogue and the “commons”. EMST highlights thematic and group exhibitions of contemporary art, as well as other forms of visual culture, and develops narratives attempting to decode the elaborate and continuously accelerating present, in an era when humanity struggles to keep up with the increasingly fast pace of changes.
Persons with Disabilities
The area of the museum is fully accessible to persons with physical disabilities, and is equipped with special seats on each floor, ramps, escalators and elevators.
More specifically, EMST has accessible entrance for people with reduced mobility or wheelchairs, located on Syggrou Avenue.
All areas of the museum are fully accessible to wheelchair users, with wooden floor, industrial floor and carpeting (which will not set a limitation to their movement). Moreover, there is appropriate elevator, serving the needs of people with mobility disabilities.
The exhibition is visually accessible based on the viewing cone from a wheelchair, but not at every exhibit.
EMST can provide its visitors with several aids such as wheelchairs, walking sticks with built-in seat, magnifying glass and earplugs.
All restrooms, except for the ones in the basement (-1 level), are wheelchair accessible.
