National Glypthotheque

Remarks/Comments about the National Glyptotheque

The National Glyptotheque is located in the Army Park in Goudi and the entrance is from Panagiotis Kanellopoulos Avenue (Katehaki) in Athens. It also occupies an open-air space of 6.5 acres, in which there is a magnificent sculpture park.

The buildings were leased by the Ministry of National Defence, renovated with the help of Community funds and converted into exhibition spaces with the donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

The National Glyptotheque was inaugurated on 26 July 2004, with a retrospective exhibition by Henry Moore and monumental sculptures on wood by Christos Kapralos. On 27 June 2006, the permanent exhibition of Modern Greek Sculpture was inaugurated, in which, for the first time, a complete picture of the sculpture collection is presented in a separate space. For the first time, a comprehensive catalogue was also published, which is also available in English. The cost of the presentation of the sculptures and the publication of the catalogue was borne by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

The exhibition consists of ten sections, which reflect the beginning and evolution of Modern Greek Sculpture up to the present day. The sections are accompanied by explanatory wall texts, while digital information stations and QR codes, using handheld devices, provide visitors with more information about each sculpture. At the entrance of the exhibition, independently of the Greek works, six characteristic creations of important foreign sculptors are presented.

Persons with Disabilities

The National Glyptotheque is fully accessible to people with disabilities - wheelchair users from the entrance to all areas open to the public.

The museum is located on a single level, so the movement of people with mobility disabilities is very easy and smooth from the parking area all the way through. Also, there is a properly designed WC for the disabled.

The National Glyptotheque organises educational programmes and activities for all ages, many of which are accessible to people with disabilities.

Persons with disabilities and one of their companions are entitled to free admission, the latter if they have a disability of 67% or more, regardless of their country of origin, upon presentation of their identity card or passport and the Disability Certificate E.F.K.A. (decision of the Disability Certification Centre - KEPA) for residents of Greece or a similar certificate from a corresponding competent body abroad.
