Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki

Remarks/Comments on the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki

The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki is one of the largest museums in the country and the central museum of Northern Greece. With unique collections of ancient artefacts, with rich activity and extroversion, it is always ready to welcome its visitors. It is located in the centre of the city and at the heart of its cultural life, being close to other museums and archaeological sites.

Persons with Disabilities

In recent years, the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki has made considerable progress in the field of accessibility for people with disabilities, improving its facilities, using new technologies and organising educational programmes for people with disabilities in its premises.

It is worth noting that the museum has made great strides in the field of accessibility for people with mobility, visual and hearing disabilities in its premises, as well as for visitors on the autism spectrum. It also has an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).

The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki is accessible to people with disabilities, as it meets all accessibility criteria in order to provide its visitors with an optimal experience.

Specifically, access to the main entrance of the museum is via an appropriately designed ramp from Army Avenue, to the left of the entrance. The dimensions of the door are sufficient to accommodate people with mobility disabilities - wheelchair users.

The distance from the nearest pedestrian ramp to the entrance of the museum is approximately 120m:

At the entrance of the museum there is a floor plan of the building in a prominent place for the information of visitors.

The exhibition areas are developed on two levels and movement in them is achieved with stairs, special lifts and lifts with appropriate specifications for wheelchairs, while there are handrails in the staircases and ramps. In the exhibition areas as well as in all areas of the museum that are open to visitors, there is sufficient space for wheelchair passage and rotation with a smooth floor surface and non-slip material. There are also captions and exhibits at the appropriate height so that visitors can enjoy the exhibits within the space, with few exceptions. It should be noted that there are seating areas in the exhibition areas so that visitors who need to rest can do so, and wheelchairs are available on request.

Furthermore, within the museum there is an event area accessible to wheelchair users from the public side.

The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki has appropriately designed sanitary facilities for people with disabilities - wheelchair users in all areas of the building complex.
